Understanding Speed Units: MPH, KPH, and Knots

Speed shows up on car dashboards, weather reports, and nautical charts in three different units depending on where you are and what you're measuring. They all describe the same thing — distance covered per unit of time — but the base distance unit differs, which is where confusion creeps in.

Miles per hour (mph)

Miles per hour is the standard speed unit in the United States, the United Kingdom (for road signage), and a handful of other countries. It measures how many miles are covered in one hour, and it's what you'll see on car speedometers and highway speed limit signs in those regions.

Kilometers per hour (km/h or kph)

Kilometers per hour is the metric equivalent and the standard used by most of the world for road speeds, weather reports, and general everyday reference. Since a kilometer is shorter than a mile, the same real-world speed produces a larger number in km/h than in mph — 60 mph is about 96.6 km/h.

Knots

A knot is one nautical mile per hour, and it's the standard unit for maritime and aviation speed worldwide, regardless of whether a country otherwise uses metric or imperial units. A nautical mile (1,852 meters) is based on one minute of latitude along the Earth's surface, which makes it especially useful for navigation calculations. Knots are slightly larger than mph — one knot equals about 1.15 mph.

Why aviation and shipping stick with knots

Pilots and sailors rely on nautical charts and flight plans built around latitude and longitude, and since a nautical mile directly corresponds to a minute of latitude, using knots simplifies navigation math considerably. This is also why aviation altitude is measured in feet and distances in nautical miles almost everywhere in the world, even in countries that use metric units for everything else.

A useful mental shortcut

To roughly convert mph to km/h in your head, multiply by 1.6 (or add 60% of the original number). To go from km/h to mph, multiply by 0.62 (or subtract about 38%). These aren't exact, but they're close enough for quick estimates like checking a weather forecast or a foreign speed limit sign.

Where each unit shows up in daily life

If you're driving a rental car abroad, understanding the local speed unit matters for staying within legal limits — a speed limit sign reading "100" means something very different in a country using km/h versus one using mph. Weather reports also vary: US forecasts typically state wind speed in mph, while international forecasts and most weather services elsewhere use km/h, and marine or aviation forecasts almost always use knots. Cyclists and runners tracking pace with GPS watches often see both units available and switch based on personal preference or regional convention.

Historical origins of these units

The mile itself dates back to Roman times, originally defined as 1,000 paces of a Roman legion. The modern statute mile (5,280 feet) was standardized in England in the 16th century. The kilometer emerged much later, defined during the creation of the metric system in the 1790s as one ten-thousandth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole. The nautical mile has the oldest continuous practical use of the three, tracing back to the same geometric logic sailors have used for centuries: one minute of arc along a meridian.

Beyond mph, km/h, and knots

Meters per second (m/s) is the SI-derived unit most commonly used in physics and engineering contexts, since it's built directly from the base units of meters and seconds without an intermediate hour conversion.
